Global Glasses is a project I started in 2007 with the intention of bringing eyewear to remote areas of Vietnam, Cambodia, Africa, Guyana and the Ecuadorian Amazon.
Having spent years in and out of the Amazon, I realized
there was a serious lack of reading and prescription glasses.
In fact, there were none. On a trip into the Ecuadorian
Amazon in 2006, I was over forty years old myself and wore
reading glasses. But while there, in a hut in the middle
of the jungle, I had left my reading glasses in the village
of Coca, miles away. Without glasses, I was living in a
fog.
For the first time I realized -- if I couldn't see -- people
all around me couldn't see either. I discovered the poor
eye sight of the adults was the reason the children always
repaired the fine weave of the fishing nets. This was just
one of the many tasks adults could no longer complete.
I began collecting used reading, prescription, and sunglasses
from around the USA which I will ship or or personally carry
to remote areas I travel to..
If you would like to donate glasses, please contact me at
COUGY@AOL.COM
Thanks to everyone who donated glasses, in the last 15 months I have delivered a few thousand
pair to Mexico, the Amazon, Cambodia and Peru.
